Original data · Etsy keywords
We analyzed 102,831 real Etsy keywords. One pattern runs through all of it: the more words in a phrase, the fewer sellers you're up against — and the drop is steep. A one-word keyword faces a median of 160,730 competing listings; a six-word phrase faces 392. Here's the full picture.
Competition on Etsy is concentrated on short, broad keywords. As a phrase gets longer and more specific, the field of competing listings collapses. Median competing listings fall from 160,730 on one-word terms to 392 on six-word phrases — about 410× fewer.

eRank's keyword difficulty score (0–100 — how hard a term is to rank for) tells the same story even more sharply. It barely moves through the first four words — 1- and 2-word keywords sit at a maxed-out median of 100 — and then it collapses: at 5 words the median difficulty drops into genuinely winnable territory.

Here's the opportunity. Even though long phrases are far easier to rank for, hardly anyone targets them: 60.7% of demand-bearing keywords are just one or two words, and only 9.1% are four words or more. The crowd fishes in the hardest water and leaves the winnable long tail wide open.

Figures are aggregates over Listogics' keyword corpus — 102,831 Etsy keywords gathered from keyword-research data and public top-shop tag reports, with data through 2026-08-11. The length analysis covers the 13,569 keywords that both carry real demand (at least 100 monthly searches) and have an eRank difficulty score. Word count is whitespace-separated tokens, capped at "6+". Competition is the number of competing Etsy listings; a competition of 0 is treated as unknown (eRank posted no figure) and excluded from competition medians. We report medians, which are robust to outliers; the 5- and 6-word bands are smaller samples (see the counts in each chart), while the 1–4 word gradient rests on thousands of keywords each. We publish distributions and aggregates only — never a single shop's data and never per-keyword numbers. Numbers are directional, not Etsy-official.
