The words Etsy shoppers search most

We broke 17,692 in-demand Etsy search terms into their individual words. Etsy search runs on a small set of very generic words — led by gifting and personalization — that signal what buyers want but, on their own, compete with millions of listings. The winning move is to pair them with the specifics of your product.

Etsy runs on gifting and personalization

Two themes cut across every category. Gift words appear in 6.7% of in-demand searches, and personalization words — custom, personalized, monogram — in 5.1%. That is the intent behind a huge share of Etsy shopping: buying something for someone, and making it one-of-a-kind. If your product can be a gift or personalized, saying so plainly in your title and tags matches how people actually search.

Put it in your listing: "personalized", "custom", and "gift for [her/him/mom/...]" are among the most-searched modifiers on Etsy. When they genuinely fit your item, they're some of the highest-intent words you can add — and "custom" outsearches "personalized" more than 2 to 1 (see the descriptor-words report).

The 15 most common words in Etsy search

Here are the words that appear in the most in-demand search terms. Notice what they are: broad product nouns (art, necklace, sign) and universal descriptors (custom, gold, personalized). They map onto Etsy's biggest categories — home decor and wall art, jewelry, apparel — which is exactly what our demand-by-category report found.

Share of in-demand search terms containing the word

art 7.7%
wall 7.3%
necklace 4.6%
gift 4.6%
decor 3.4%
custom 3.2%
ring 3.0%
wedding 2.8%
earrings 2.7%
gold 2.6%
christmas 2.2%
bracelet 2.2%
sign 2.2%
gifts 2.1%
sweatshirt 1.9%
These are the words everyone uses. That makes them powerful for context and weak as your only keyword — a single word like "necklace" competes with millions of listings.

Common words are crowded words — so combine them

There's a trap hiding in this list. The most common words are, by definition, the ones the most sellers are chasing — so they carry the most competition. Our keyword difficulty report found more than half of in-demand keywords are "very high" difficulty, and the keyword length report shows competition falls off a cliff as phrases get longer. The answer isn't to avoid common words — it's to combine them into something specific.

"Necklace" is unwinnable on its own. "Dainty gold layered necklace" pairs the same common words into a specific phrase a real shopper types — and one a new shop can actually rank for.

Methodology

Figures are aggregates over Listogics' keyword corpus — 102,835 Etsy keywords gathered from keyword-research data and public top-shop tag reports, with data through 2026-08-12. The word analysis covers the 17,692 search terms with real demand (at least 100 average monthly Etsy searches). Each term is split into words; a word is counted once per term, and common function words (for, the, with, and so on) plus bare numbers are excluded so the ranking reflects the words that describe what shoppers want. We publish aggregate word shares only — never a keyword paired with its numbers, and never a list of winnable phrases. The product nouns near the top track Etsy's most popular categories, so exact rankings are directional rather than an Etsy-official census.
