We grouped 31,285 in-demand Etsy searches by Etsy's own top-level categories. Two things jump out: demand is concentrated — half of it sits in just three categories — and the biggest categories are also the most crowded. Here's the map of where Etsy's demand and competition actually are.

Demand is concentrated in a few categories

Etsy is often described as endless variety, but the demand isn't spread evenly. Home & Living alone holds 21.5% of in-demand searches, and the top three categories together account for 46.9%. That's where the buyers — and the sellers — pile up.

Competition — the number of competing Etsy listings on a keyword — is highest in exactly the categories with the most demand. Art & Collectibles keywords face a median of 38,512 competing listings; Electronics & Accessories, the least crowded, still faces 7,767 — about 5× less, but far from empty.

In a crowded category, go specific and long-tail: the keyword-length data shows competition collapsing as phrases get longer.

Methodology

Figures are aggregates over Listogics' keyword corpus — 271,252 Etsy keywords gathered from keyword-research data and public top-shop tag reports, with data through 2026-08-31. This analysis covers the 31,285 keywords that carry real demand (at least 100 monthly searches) and an assigned category. Each keyword's category is one of Etsy's 15 top-level categories, assigned by an AI classifier; 2361 keywords the classifier couldn't confidently place are excluded. We report medians, which are robust to outliers; smaller categories (Electronics, Shoes, Pet Supplies) rest on fewer keywords than the large ones, so treat their figures as directional. Competition is the number of competing Etsy listings; a competition of 0 is treated as unknown (eRank posted no figure) and excluded from competition medians. We publish distributions and aggregates only — never a single shop's data and never per-keyword numbers. Figures are directional, not Etsy-official.
