Original data · Etsy tags
How long should an Etsy tag be, and how many words? We looked at 101,091 real Etsy searches to answer it with data, not opinion. The short version: the tags that match how buyers actually search are 2–3 word phrases that fit Etsy's 20-character limit.
Shoppers don't search one word — they describe what they want. Only 5.5% of searches are a single word, while 81% are 2–3 words. A tag like “necklace” competes with everything; “dainty gold necklace” matches a real, specific search.
Share of Etsy searches by word count
Among high-demand terms (1,000+ searches/month), single words jump to 24.5% — four times their overall share. The blockbuster searches really are one-word heads like “necklace” or “gift.” But those are exactly the terms our State of Etsy Search report shows are the most brutally competitive — and our Etsy keyword length report shows how sharply competition falls as phrases get longer — so chasing them means fighting the most sellers.
Word count among high-demand searches (1,000+/mo)
Each Etsy tag maxes out at 20 characters. Good news: most real searches fit — 87.2% of terms are 20 characters or fewer (the average is just 17). But 12.8% are too long to use as one tag, so don't try to cram a whole long phrase into a single slot.
Figures are aggregates over Listogics' keyword corpus — 101,091 Etsy search terms from keyword-research data and public top-shop tag reports, with data through 2026-08-10. Word count is whitespace-delimited; character length is the raw term. We publish distributions only — never a single shop's data and never per-keyword numbers. A cross-sectional snapshot, refreshed quarterly. Numbers are directional, not Etsy-official.
