Original data · Etsy descriptor words
Shoppers describe what they want with a small, predictable set of words — and the ranking is full of surprises. Custom is the #1 descriptor, and it beats "personalized" more than 2.3 to 1. The bigger shock: "handmade", Etsy's whole identity, is barely searched. Here's what shoppers actually type.
Sellers argue endlessly over "custom" versus "personalized". The data settles it: custom appears in 609 in-demand search terms to personalized's 269 — more than 2.3 to 1. Both are worth using where they fit, but if you only have room for one in a title or tag, "custom" reaches more shoppers. After those two, the biggest descriptors are vintage and monogram — buyers who want a specific look or a name on it.
Share of in-demand Etsy searches that use each descriptor
Here's the counterintuitive part. "Handmade" is Etsy's entire brand — yet it shows up in just 0.26% of in-demand searches. Shoppers assume Etsy is handmade; they don't type the word. The trendy aesthetic labels are small too: minimalist, boho, cottagecore and "aesthetic" each sit near the bottom of the list, well under 1%. They're real niches, but far smaller as searches than social media makes them feel.
Figures are aggregates over Listogics' keyword corpus — 104,296 Etsy keywords gathered from keyword-research data and public top-shop tag reports, with data through 2026-08-12. The analysis covers the 18,281 search terms with real demand (at least 100 average monthly Etsy searches). A term is counted for a descriptor when it contains one of that descriptor's specific words (custom, personalized, vintage, monogram, and so on). Only customization and style descriptors are measured — materials and product nouns are deliberately excluded so the "descriptor" framing stays honest. A term can carry more than one descriptor, so the shares sum to more than the "names any descriptor" figure. We publish aggregate shares only — never a keyword paired with its numbers. Figures are directional, not Etsy-official.
