Etsy SEO Glossary

The words that come up again and again in Etsy search — explained in plain English, with no jargon. Bookmark it, or jump to a term below.

Etsy SEO
The practice of optimizing your listings — title, tags, attributes, and content — so they rank well in Etsy's search and get shown to the right shoppers. Full guide →
Tags
Up to 13 keyword phrases you add to a listing, each up to 20 characters, that tell Etsy what the item is about. Filling all 13 with real multi-word phrases is one of the strongest things you can do for reach. How to choose all 13 →
Title
The listing's name and its most important keyword field, up to 140 characters. Etsy weights the front of the title most, so the phrase most shoppers search should come first. How to write titles that rank →
Keyword
A word or phrase a shopper types into Etsy search. Your job in SEO is to match the keywords real buyers use to the words in your title and tags. Keyword research →
Long-tail keyword
A longer, more specific multi-word phrase (for example "personalized dog mom mug" instead of "mug"). It has less search volume but far less competition, so a new shop can actually rank for it. Finding low-competition keywords →
Head term
A short, broad, high-demand keyword like "necklace" or "mug". It gets huge search volume but faces the most competing listings, so it's the hardest to rank for.
Search volume (demand)
How many times a keyword is searched in a given period. High volume means more potential traffic — but usually more competition too.
Competition
How many other listings target the same keyword. The more listings competing for a term, the harder it is for yours to appear on the first page.
Keyword difficulty (KD)
A score from keyword tools estimating how hard it is to rank for a term, based on competition and demand. Lower KD means an easier win. See a free Low/Medium/High read →
Relevancy
How closely a listing's title, tags, attributes, and category match a shopper's search query. Relevancy is the first thing Etsy checks — if a query doesn't match your listing's words, nothing else matters.
Listing quality score
Etsy's read on how well a listing converts the shoppers who see it — clicks, favorites, and especially sales. A listing that converts well gets ranked higher over time.
Attributes
Structured details you set from your category's options — color, material, occasion, size, and more. Etsy matches attributes in search and in filters, so filling the relevant ones widens your reach.
Category (taxonomy)
Etsy's tree of product types. Choosing the most specific correct category helps you show up when shoppers narrow their search with filters.
Impressions
The number of times your listing appeared in search results or on a browse page. High impressions with few clicks usually points to a weak first photo or title. Reading your Shop Stats →
Click-through rate (CTR)
The share of people who saw your listing and clicked it. Your first photo and title do the work of earning that click. Photos that win the click →
Conversion rate
The share of visitors to a listing who actually buy. Low conversion with good traffic points to price, photos, reviews, or shipping — not search. Views but no sales? →
Favorites
When a shopper saves your listing or shop. Favorites are an engagement signal that feeds a listing's quality score and can bring the shopper back to buy.
Recency (freshness)
Etsy gives a new or newly renewed listing a small, short-lived visibility boost. It's minor in 2026 and fades within a day or two — not a substitute for good SEO.
Renewing
Paying $0.20 to re-list an item, which resets its "listed" date for a small freshness signal. Rarely worth it as a ranking tactic on its own. Is renewing worth it? →
Etsy Ads (onsite)
Pay-per-click advertising inside Etsy search. You set a daily budget and Etsy picks the keywords to bid on from your title, tags, and category — so good SEO also lowers your ad cost. Are Etsy Ads worth it? →
Offsite Ads
Etsy advertising your listings on external sites like Google and Facebook. You pay a fee (15%, or 12% for high-volume shops) only when a sale comes from one of those ads. Offsite Ads explained →
Variations
Preset options a buyer picks from a dropdown on one listing — size, color, material. They keep all versions of a product on a single listing, which concentrates its sales and reviews. Setting up variations →
Personalization
Fields where a buyer supplies custom input you can't list in advance, such as a name or date. As of 2026 a listing can have up to five personalization fields (text, dropdown, or file upload), each required or optional with its own character limit.
Star Seller
A badge Etsy awards shops that hit its service targets over a rolling period — fast message replies, on-time shipping with tracking, and strong reviews. Earning more reviews →
Free shipping guarantee
Etsy tends to favor US listings that offer free shipping (or free shipping on orders over $35), because shoppers filter and convert better on it. Build the cost into your price so it still pays. Setting up shipping →
Off-Etsy SEO
Etsy listings can also rank in Google search. A clear title, a keyword-rich description, and links to your shop help your listings get found beyond Etsy itself. Do Etsy listings show up on Google? →
