What Changed on Etsy in 2026 (and What It Means for Your Shop)

2026 has been one of the busier years for Etsy in a while: new leadership, higher fees in some countries, and a tariff shake-up that touches anyone importing or shipping across borders. If your sales slipped and you are not sure why, here is what has actually changed — with dates and sources — and, more usefully, what each change means for your shop.

The short version: Etsy is leaning harder on listings that actually convert, fees went up for sellers in certain countries, and the old duty-free allowance for small US shipments is gone. None of it is a reason to panic — but two of the three deserve a look at your margins.

1. New leadership and a “marketplace rebuild”

On January 1, 2026, Kruti Patel Goyal became Etsy's CEO, with former chief executive Josh Silverman moving to Executive Chair (Etsy's own announcement). She has been at Etsy since 2010 and previously ran Depop. In interviews since, she has described a “marketplace rebuild” focused on quality and on whether shoppers are genuinely satisfied — and in mid-2026 Etsy reorganised, cutting roughly 12 percent of its workforce to push in that direction.

What it means for you: the ranking factors Etsy publishes have not been thrown out — relevance, listing quality, recency, shop quality, and buyer experience are still the game. But the emphasis has sharpened toward the “listing quality” half: does the listing that gets shown actually get clicked, favourited, and bought? A listing that ranks on clever keywords but doesn't convert loses ground over time. If you only do one thing after reading this, make your listings complete and genuinely tempting to buy — that is exactly the lever Etsy is rewarding. (We break the five factors down in how the Etsy algorithm works.)

2. Higher Regulatory Operating Fees in some countries

On June 22, 2026, Etsy raised its Regulatory Operating Fee in a number of markets that levy digital-services taxes. In the UK it went from 0.32% to 0.48%, France's more than doubled, and Hungary started paying it for the first time. This fee is a percentage of the total order (item price plus shipping), charged on top of the usual transaction, payment-processing, and listing fees — and it only applies to sellers based in the countries that have it.

What it means for you: if you sell from the UK, France, Italy, Spain, or another affected country, your effective take-home per sale dropped slightly on that date. It is a small percentage, but it stacks with everything else Etsy deducts, so it is worth re-checking your margins and, if needed, your prices. Sellers outside those countries are not affected by this particular change. Our free Etsy fee calculator lets you plug in your own numbers and see the real take-home.

3. The end of the $800 de minimis rule (and Etsy's DDP requirement)

For years, shipments valued under $800 could enter the United States duty-free under the “de minimis” exemption. That allowance has ended — the suspension became indefinite on June 24, 2026 — so small parcels into the US now face import duties they did not before. In response, Etsy now requires non-US sellers shipping to US buyers to prepay those duties using Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) shipping, effective July 9, 2026, so the buyer sees an all-in price rather than a surprise bill at delivery.

What it means for you: if you ship into the US from outside it — or if you are a US seller who imports materials or finished goods — your landed costs went up, and you need to build that into your pricing rather than absorb it quietly. If you sell domestically within your own country and source locally, this one largely passes you by. Either way, the takeaway is the same as fee change #2: know your real cost per sale before you set a price.

What to actually do this month

One thing that did not change: Etsy still ranks real, well-made listings for real products. Nothing here rewards mass-produced filler — if anything, the quality push cuts the other way. Complete, accurate, converting listings for the items you actually make is the durable strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the new Etsy CEO in 2026?

Kruti Patel Goyal became Etsy's CEO on January 1, 2026, with former CEO Josh Silverman moving to Executive Chair. She joined Etsy in 2010 and previously led Depop. Her stated focus is a marketplace rebuild centred on quality and buyer satisfaction, and in mid-2026 Etsy also cut about 12 percent of its workforce to reorganise around that goal.

Did Etsy raise its fees in 2026?

Yes. Etsy raised its Regulatory Operating Fee on June 22, 2026 in several countries with digital-services taxes. In the UK it went from 0.32% to 0.48%, France's more than doubled, and Hungary began paying it for the first time. It is a percentage of the total order (item plus shipping) charged on top of the usual transaction, payment, and listing fees, and it only affects sellers in the countries where it applies.

How does the end of the $800 de minimis rule affect Etsy sellers?

The United States ended the de minimis exemption that let shipments under $800 enter duty-free; the suspension became indefinite on June 24, 2026. Etsy now requires non-US sellers shipping to US buyers to cover import duties upfront using Delivered Duty Paid shipping, effective July 9, 2026. In practice, sellers who import materials or ship into the US need to build the new duty costs into their prices rather than surprising buyers at delivery.
